The Number 9

These kinds of things fascinate me to my literal core. You would think that the number 9 is as good as just another number, but there’s something very different and interesting going on with this number. In this article we will look at number 9 from different perspectives.

It’s a number after all so, let’s look at it from Mathematical point of view

Mathematically

The number 9 is biggest single digit number. If any natural number is multiplied by 9 and the digits of the answer are repeatedly added until it is just one digit, the sum will be 9.

·         2 × 9 = 18 (1 + 8 = 9)

·         121 × 9 = 1089 (1 + 0 + 8 + 9 = 18; 1 + 8 = 9)

·         578329 × 9 = 5204961 (5 + 2 + 0 + 4 + 9 + 6 + 1 = 27; 2 + 7 = 9)

Putting the digit nine into any number does not change the sum of the digits of that number.

83: 8+3=11; 1+1=2

893: 8+9+3=20; 2+0=2.

If you divide a number by the amount of 9s corresponding to its number of digits the number turns a repeating decimal (E.g. 569/999= 0.569569569……)

There’s also an arithmetical procedure developed to test out the correctness of calculations of sums, differences, products, and divisions known as Casting out nines. You can learn more about it here.

Commercially

Ever wondered why your new smartphone costs 19,999 and not an even 20,000? This is because the number 9 also plays an important role in pricing of the products, this is known as Psychological Pricing.

There is evidence that consumers tend to perceive just-below prices as being lower than they actually are, tending to round to the next lowest monetary unit. Thus, prices such as 19,999 may to some degree be associated with spending 19,000 rather than 20,000. This hypothesis suggests that people perceive the difference between 19,999 and 21,000 to be closer to 2,000 than to 1,000 because their judgments are anchored on the leftmost digit.
