Recently, I’ve received a delivery from Amazon, it was a travel bag,
it’s the first time I’ve received something with minimal packing and there was
a sticker on it saying “Thank you for joining our effort to protect the
environment. Reducing packing material is one step towards greener future.”
This got me thinking whether only reducing packing is the way or should we develop
some kind of packing material which should give something back to the
environment. Keeping this thought in my mind I starting searching for packing
alternatives which gives something back to the environment, the searches didn’t
show up with many credible results and the common suggestion was to use more Paper
instead of Plastics. Then one of my friends told me about Seed Paper and I
started researching about the topic and found many fascinating things and it’s
really an incredible thing.
What is Seed Paper?
Seed paper is a recyclable Eco-friendly paper manufactured with post- end-user
material and fixed with seeds. In addition to this, when the paper is implanted
into the earth, the seeds germinate by themselves and sprout and the paper
decomposes away. Seed paper does not need trees to be cut nor does it involve
toxic bleaching. It is a sustainable product that germinates into a plant after
use.

Manufacturing Process of Seed Paper
Making seed
paper is not that difficult, you can do this at home and then draw/decorate it
to use it as a note with gifts. All you need is- Paper (to make paper pulp), Water,
Seeds, mixing bowl & blender, Towels or cloths, Cookie cutters to make tag
shapes (if desired), and A piece of plastic wrap or parchment paper. You can
follow the instructions here
to make your own seed paper and surprise your friends.
Can Seed Paper Replace Normal
Paper?
The one-word
answer here is “No” well, not completely. Due to the fact that seed paper
contains Seed the paper cannot be as lighter and thinner as normal
writing/printing paper. It cannot completely replace writing/printing paper however,
it is very suitable in place of heavy paper like Invitation cards, coasters, door
hangers, calendars, visiting cards, outer packing of product and cardboard box
etc.
The big
companies can use this paper for printing their user manuals and other product
related statutory paper-work which must be included in the box, and almost
nobody reads them anyway. So, instead of using a normal paper, they can greet
their consumer with something that they can actually use to give something back
to the environment and also minimize the waste & repurpose utilized products.
