The Apple vs Epic battle
"Apple has removed Epic Games’ battle
royale game Fortnite from the App Store after the developer on Thursday
implemented its own in-app payment system that bypassed Apple’s standard 30
percent fee."
According to Apple such an act is a violation
of their App Store guidelines and as a result the Fortnite app has been removed
from the store.
Epic also implemented the same feature in their
android version, leading Google to take similar action and remove the game from
play store as well. But due to comparatively open nature of android platform
this is not a big issue as the users can still side-load the app from other
stores.
The reason that the Apple's decision is getting
so much attention is because of closed nature and monopoly of Apple on the App
Store and also because Apple is already going through antitrust concerns over
its operation of the App Store.
Further on the issue, Apple has also informed
Epic that "on Friday, August 28 Apple will terminate all their developer
accounts." If this were to happen any developer using the Unreal Engine
would be unable to patch security flaws or fix bugs, effectively halting
support for a wide range of games on iOS and macOS.
